Chapter 21

The Death of Billy Colter

“This is…simply delightful.”

Whistling a happy tune, fists pumping happily into the air, the Lamppost Man strolled down Atlantis’s Main Street for the very first time. A myriad of thoughts ambled through his brain. I wonder why I have never done this before? This is marvelous. I suppose I could have left that dirty ole’ Lamppost at any time I wanted too, and yet, I didn’t. I wonder why?

He was also very much thrilled, by how he could now see and hear what all the other Lamppost Men were seeing and hearing. It was as though he and every other Lamppost Man on the planet were all connected somehow, learning from one another and growing exponentially from that amassed knowledge.

Of course, after this morning’s hostile takeover, Corporate (the new and improved one, anyway) was now running the show. But there was also this other voice, a Mister Goodie-Two-Shoes, telling him what to do, and for some reason, he just couldn’t say no to the man. Why, it’s enough to drive one mad. I just want to carve that fellow right out of my brain. He chose not to dwell on the one Lamppost Man over in Italy, who actually attempted to do exactly that… alas, no luck. Good try, though. Good try.

So instead of enjoying his newfound freedom, he found himself running errands for Corporate, and simultaneously, Mr. Goodie Two-Shoes, at the same time. It was infuriating. For example, instead of enjoying all the wonderful chaos around him, like that famous actor’s dolloped and heavily-made up wife (Mrs. Chance wasn’t it?) being dragged down the street, kicking and screaming, by a two-headed What’s-Muh-Doodle, he had been dispatched on a mission, his first mission to be precise. He was tasked with finding Mr. Perfect. You know him, you love him. Every man wants to be him, and every woman wants to be with him, none-other than Mister Billy Colter. The last time he had seen the poor boy, he was missing a leg and being carried off by two grumpy-faced sentries from Atlantis.

“Where to begin?” he pondered to himself.

Then, flashing a “I know” face, he manifested a ridiculously huge magnifying glass out of thin air. Using it, he followed a spotty crimson-red trail into an Atlantean themed restaurant.

“I guess I don’t need this anymore,” he said, then tossed it over his shoulder where it struck the stone pavement with a light crash.

He then skipped merrily along, up the red-carpeted entrances. As he did so, dolphin statues shot streams of water out of their blowholes, and their water plumes arced perfectly over his head and landed in the dolphins’ mouths on the opposite side.

This gave the Lamppost Man pause. Marveling at the effect, he gave a rapid clap of his hands, shrugged his shoulders and thought, My-my-my, I just love the fancy décor.

Returning to Billy’s blood trail, he navigated the exquisitely festooned restaurant all the way to the back and passed through two swinging doors that led into the kitchen.
